City hosts informal sector Covid-19 webinar to help support traders

All informal traders are encouraged to continue to co-operate and work with the City of Cape Town to help reduce the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic while earning a living. As part of the efforts to support this vital sector, the City will be hosting a webinar tomorrow Tuesday 29 June with informal traders to remind them of the importance of Covid-19 protocols and to discuss how to shield this industry during crisis, among others. With the rapid rise in Covid-19 infections, and the President’s announcement that the country is placed on Adjusted Alert Level 4 from today Monday 28 June 2021, informal traders are reminded to please take extra precautionary measures and continue to observe Covid-19 protocols in an effort to reduce the spread of the virus.
To assist informal traders, the City’s Urban Management Directorate through the Area Economic Development Department will monitor and ensure compliance with Covid-19 protocols and the Disaster Risk Management regulations in trading areas across Cape Town, by:
- Ensuring traders comply with trading conditions
- Avoiding overcrowding
- Ensuring all traders and customers wear masks
- Regular sanitising of traders and customers at trading spots and
- Keeping a safe distance between traders and customers
To further support this industry, the City will also host an Informal Sector Covid-19 webinar to: - Reiterate the message on the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic
- Get recommendations and possible solutions on how the informal sector leadership, government and the private sector can shield the informal sector during this continued crisis
- Get input towards recovery strategies to rebuild the informal trading sector post the third wave.

The regulations under adjusted Alert level 4 include: - Curfew in place between 21:00 until 04:00 daily
- Non-essential establishments must close at 20:00
- nter-provincial travel in and out of Gauteng for leisure is prohibited, except for essential and business purposes
- Alcohol sales are banned
- Restaurants are limited to takeaways and deliveries
- All gatherings banned except for funerals, which are capped at 50 people in a socially-distanced setting
- Public spaces such as beaches will remain open but no gatherings allowed
- Wearing a mask in public spaces remains compulsory under national lockdown regulations .
‘Informal trading spaces can draw a lot of foot traffic and can become crowded easily. Let us not become complacent. It remains mandatory for every person to wear a face mask that covers their nose and mouth at all times when in public spaces. Furthermore, the City remains committed to create meaningful and sustainable economic development opportunities for all its citizens. I trust that I can count on the support from informal traders to help curb the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Management, Alderman Grant Twigg.
